Interview with Reka Nyari
What message(s) do you want to express through your work? My work really varies in theme and context from a to z. I do clean commercial work, edgy erotic shoots, and a lot in between. I am, however, the happiest when I get to push boundaries and add a bit of sex, edge, and intrigue to my work. I am fascinated by strength and submission, body language, the play between dark and light, and the little demon in all of us.
Which artists inspire you? Who are your masters? Many… A few that come to mind are Cindy Sherman, Guy Bourdin, Helmut Newton, Miles Altridge, Terry Richardson, Steven Klein, Solve Sunsbro…
What have you gained by being on the internet? It’s actually been great… I get a lot of work and exposure from my website, as well as other photography platforms I take part in. Flickr was fantastic for me when I was just getting started in photography.
Did the internet enable you to meet new models, to find new exhibit places? In the beginning, yes… I did not have a great book yet, and it enabled me to meet other talented stylists, make up and hair artists, and models that were looking for collaboration. These days I mostly take the agency route, although sometimes might find an interesting face on the net as well.
Has your work ever been censored? If so, how did you deal with it?Not that I know of.
What projects mean a lot to you at the moment?I am starting to shoot a lot of “art” photography, besides my usual fashion shoots, which I am very excited about. I am in Europe at the moment shooting some erotic nude photography, and returning to New York in late August to resume to regular work, as well as to shoot new material for my next exhibition, which will happen in Fall 2009.
Could you tell us a few words about the place you live/work in?I live and mostly work in NYC, more specifically in the Lower East Side. I love it… Artistic, interesting, fun. I have a home office, and a small studio in the West Village. I prefer to shoot on location, so my work really takes me around the city and beyond.
