Interview with Nathan Strausse
What message(s) do you want to express through your work? I guess an overall idea of my work is sort of an exploration. An exploration of desires, kinks, emotions. To convey however “intense” or “outside the box” fetishes and kinks can be, they still can be displayed as beautiful and artistic. There is an emotional part of these acts that really have not been delved, into in my mind. The closeness or trust one must give to another. The strength and confidence to display to the world someone’s naked self. The emotional side as well as physical.
Which artists inspire you? Who are your masters?I feel I am more inspired about the situation, than by artists. I enjoy artists techniques and craft, but find the act, desires and story to be more enticing for me. As for some artists I appreciate, well there’s always the standards, like Newton, Avedon. I am a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick. He is the best cinematic Director there is/was. His use of the camera with framing and movement is unmatched. His story lines are involving, psychological. He delves a lot into the inner psyche of man. Vlastimil Kula’s book I find very compelling.
What have you gained by being on the internet?I think like most, the internet has broadened my exposure to the world. I can reach far off countries with a click of the mouse. It provides an opportunity with people like myself with limited funds to reach a great number of people. Of course, a result of this is also a over-saturation of content as well. So on one hand you get exposure, on the other, you have to work harder to stand out from the rest.
Did the internet enable you to meet new models, to find new exhibit places?I have met some great models that I have worked with over the internet. Especially when I travel, I always try to find girls that are in the area of where I will be.
Has your work ever been censored? If so, how did you deal with it?I have never been censored yet, that I know of. Not sure how I would deal with it. This whole argument of “obscene” is solely based upon personal opinion. One person’s trash could be another’s treasure. Who am I to say or you to say what is what.
What projects mean a lot to you at the moment?Well, I have just started my pay site and so that’s the top one on my list right now. I have also been discussing doing a installation/gallery show. Finding the right venue is key. As the subject matter that I want to display will be explicit. It would be a mix of mediums and interactions. There are a few places I have been talking to, but nothing confirmed yet.
Could you tell us a few words about the place you live/work in?I pretty much live where I work, which is a small studio apartment in the heart of Hollywood, CA. No frills, pretty much minimalist. I am surrounded by computers, instruments, cameras, props and shrink wrap machines. Only things that I use constantly, I keep. Over the past few years, I have been scaling down what I own. No televisions (eyesore), microwaves (makes food taste funny), huge stereo systems (my small computer speakers work fine). I watch movies on my computer. It is perfect for me though. Keeps it simple for me. I wake up at work. Can jump on the computer and edit or whatever anytime. Sometimes I get caught up in everything though and do not go out for days, which is not very good on the constitution. I have been trying to go hiking at least three times a week, which gets me out, keeps me in a better mind frame.
