Interview with Carl
What message(s) do you want to express through your work? We hear too often that a naked man is unattractive. That idea, against all that is demonstrated by the antique statuary, is historically recent but unfortunately firmly-rooted in our modern society. I reacted to it when I was still a very young teenager and, as soon as I was eigtheen, I understood that by posing naked I could struggle on a personal account against that illusion. Afterwards, this motivation remained, coupled with the motive of helping artists whose inspiration and work are always an object of wonder.
Which artists inspire you? Who are your masters? As a model, I do not have to be inspired by things already done by other artists. On the contrary, I have to kindle the inspiration of the artists for whom I pose by offering them to freely discover my body the way they prefer, the way it suits them. I regard my body as a multifaceted landscape and with many paths the artists can cover in any direction, stopping any time they feel like to create a representation of it according to their sensibility and their feeling of the moment. When I pose, I first try to create a link of confidence and mutual complicity between the artist and I that would be favourable to the fulfilment of his or her inspiration.
What have you gained by being on the internet?I have received many messages of people telling me they were particularly sensible to the male nudity aesthetics as it can be appreciated through the very diverse works for which I posed. The congratulations I received for the most erotic works among them represent to me a personal victory against the pornography that taints the most admirable things.
Did the internet enable you to meet new models, to find new exhibit places?Once again, as a model, those are not my aims. On the other hand, I have entered in some nice relationships with artists and other models.
Has your work ever been censored? If so, how did you deal with it?I have sometimes been censored when placing advertisements. I had to conclude that my action was more than justified!
What projects mean a lot to you at the moment?I would particularly like to help beginning artists and artists who cannot indulge for paying models. Unfortunately, nowadays, by lack of time or by mere suspicion, a lot of artists prefer to work from photographies rather than with a living model. But a photography is a moment isolated in time and it cannot arouse that aesthetic emotion we can feel when discovering through our very eyes a living model around whom we can turn to find some original point of view. This is that very emotion that is so often the starting point of a wonderful inspiration… I would also like to pose for a series of bodyscapes from macrophotographies of very small areas of the body, to show that the aesthetic beauty of the body can be perceived as a whole as well as in each of its parts, down to the tiniest.
Could you tell us a few words about the place you live/work in?I live in Belgium in the Liege area. I accept to pose all around Belgium for very motivated people.
