Interview with Martine Edelman
What message(s) do you want to express through your work? Maybe not expressing a message, rather sharing my vision of the human nature, the ambiguity of the being with its male and female sides, the fragile balance of the couple, the time passing by which changes the deal, or simply love.
Which artists inspire you? Who are your masters? All the artists I like are definitively non-figurative. But when I start working, things take their place by themselves, so I cannot really tell where my inspiration comes from as my work is figurative.
What have you gained by being on the internet?I think this is necessary to be on the internet. One of the first request of galleries and even clients is to know the name of my website.
Has your work ever been censored? If so, how did you deal with it?We cannot talk about censorship. Some of my work about “SEX” is not selected by some galleries, but everything works fine generally.
What projects mean a lot to you at the moment?A new series of sculptures that will go around the world and…
Could you tell us a few words about the place you live/work in?I live in Brussels and I work in a workshop I have created with a friend of mine. We are six female sculptors to share a really feminine magic space where our calendar is Les Dieux du Stade (The Gods of the Stadium) and where men are admitted only during coffee time!
