Mirrotica (Nora Ness & Sander Steins)

Nora Ness’ self-portraits with her camera so often prominently shown like a reminder of her presence on both sides of the camera associated with Sander Steins’ romantic montages with a darker je ne sais quoi, a depth adding itself and transposing the mere poses in a different visual world, like a touch of infused glamor, a lighting bringing its own light and a new point of view.

Interview with Nora Ness & Sander Steins

Since how long are you working together?

Sander Steins: We started working together serious since May this Year.

How did your collaboration start?

Sander Steins: I found the work of Nora on Myspace and thought it was very beautiful. On one afternoon I decided to edit two pieces and sent them to her and I was glad she liked the edited works. That was the starting point for our collaboration.

Do you work together or each of you on your own side?

Nora Ness: We do not work together directly, but we inspire each other with ideas, we share our creativity. I think we both have the same idea about erotic art which makes our working together very easy. I always say to Sander that we are understanding each other without words, because there is a chemistry between our works.

Is the distance between you a break or an ally to your collaboration?

Nora Ness: The distance is not a problem at all. Hey, we live in 2007, we have internet and telephone, so sharing thoughts and ideas is not a problem. For me, it is a challenge. I am always excited about the fact that the great erotic art Sander and I can create without knowing personally each other.

Has this collaboration an influence on your personal work?

Sander Steins: I think all my projects I did so far have had influence on my future work, so also the Mirrotica project.

Nora Ness: It certainly has, any contact with another artist influences your work, we are influenced by our environment all the time. I have a good example: Sander had the idea to make a photo series of a business lady, he told me this some day and I arranged this story some days later. The outcome was our Out of Office series, which is very erotic and very smart as well.

What made you choose Nora Ness’ photographs as a basis to your work?

Sander Steins: Her work is so personal and I also love the fact that she is not just an 18-year-old girl but a lady with a complete life behind her. That makes her way of posing so real and attractive. I love ladies with a strong and interesting personality… Nora inspires me and this project feels like she is a muse at a distance.

How does your collaboration with Nora Ness bring a different dimension to your usual work?

Sander Steins: Working with Nora is a real pleasure. She is a lady I would really want to photograph myself, but I think nobody can do it better than herself. The fact that she makes self-portraits gives her the best possible playground that no other photographer can create. But editing her work is for me like a massive playground as well. I really can freak with dark ideas and have complete freedom. Every artist’s dream…

What does Sander Steins work give to your self-portraits?

Nora Ness: Sander’s work is very extraordinary, I love his dark visions, this darkness was exactely what made me ask him for a collaboration. I adore this combination of extreme erotic moments, which you can see very often in my work, and Sander’s very special style. Sander’s digital alteration seems to be made for my work, it gives it a very special kick. The combination of our work is a totally new erotic style which has never been seen, so far. I think we are pioneers in creating a totally new kind of erotic art. I also like that my more extreme erotic work gets a softer touch through Sander’s editing, and I love the surreal expression which makes my work looking like from another time.

Do you have other collaboration projects, together or with other people?

Sander Steins: I work as well under my own name as under the name Visualclash and ASKIIARTNL. For me as photographer I always work with different people on different projects. I work with fashion designers, models and I am planning to start working on a project about women over 30.

Nora Ness: I have no other collaborations so far, but my work has been used by some artists for paintings and drawings. These artists found my work, like Sander, via the internet, and asked me if they can use it for their work. If I like the work of an artist, I do not have anything against it when the title of the work makes clear the original is created by Nora Ness.
