Confined in the rectangle of the canvas, the models struggle to haul themselves out of it and take up in so doing the small piece of space allotted to them, the muscles bulge with the strain and the faces contort, realistic study of the frontiers of body and space on a white background with no other scale or depth than the ones given by the model.

Interview with Brian Biedul

What message(s) do you want to express through your work?

While most of western art history consists of art that is created to express a message, mine is not. I am currently interested in exploring the very nature of art. The classic question “What is Art?” My work in creating gestalt spaces is one line of experimentation in that search.
“Things” exist in nature but “Art” exists in the mind.
A piece of woven cotton nailed to cut wood and smeared with linseed oil infused with pigment becomes the “La Gioconda” only in the mind of the artist and viewer.
This is a product of being human. How do a few lines on paper become a house?
This is part of the process important to me at this time.

Which artists inspire you? Who are your masters?

Lita Albuquerque, Giovanni Batista Moroni, Dwight Harmon and Mark Rothko.
There are hundreds more but I will say that sometimes I go to Museums just to look at hands or the transitions between light and shadow.

What have you gained by being on the internet?

Exposure, big time!

Did the internet enable you to meet new models, to find new exhibit places?

No.

Has your work ever been censored? If so, how did you deal with it?

Not yet.

What projects mean a lot to you at the moment?

I am working on a series of outdoor installations in Palm Springs that I will be putting up in the next few months. I will be posting them on my site as they are finished.

Could you tell us a few words about the place you live/work in?

I have a small studio in Mar Vista, CA.
